I had the pleasure of meeting Shelley Winters very briefly at the Chelsea hotel in NYC in the early 1980s. She was looking for a room number and asked me for directions. What a lovely woman she was! She had such a radiant smile, and her eyes sparkled with great warmth and intelligence. She had a glow about her. I wish I could have talked to her, and heard her tell stories about her life. But it would have been inappropriate to impose on her in any way, I think. So I said "I think it's in that direction" and pointed right toward the room she was looking for. Just wanted to say a word about the short piece about V. N. Dantchenko. I first ran across Dantchenko back in 1979 in the U. Michigan library. I was working on my dissertation in oceanography when my brain began to fog over. To combat this I roamed the stacks around my cube and found a book on early 20ieth century Russian history. The book about/by(?) Dantchenko was one I picked up. I was surprised that the Soviet government let something like this occur. There were VND's stories about meeting Faulkner and others. Very interesting. Tonight I thought I would google Dantchenko just to see if there were more about him. We hear a lot about Stanislavski and the theatre but not much about Dantchenko. Too bad.
